SIGHT WORDS PAGE
Dear Families:
Every Thursday, our students will be assessed on their NSWD sight words. For your child’s reading development, it is crucial to know sight words for the following reasons:
Our ultimate goal is actually to know all of Fry’s First 100 Words. However, your child will only be tested on NSWD sight words. Notably, most of Fry’s words are our NSWD Sight Words! Fry’s First 100 Words is the master list of words students should know in kindergarten, and we will be working on both NSWD and Fry’s Words in class. So parents- if your child already knows his or her NSWD sight words, I recommend that you work on Fry’s List of First 100 Words, as well as work further on NSWD words!
Additionally, I will test students on the following week’s NSWD words if appropriate; and if they test out, I will keep testing further! They can test out of the words, but I will still test them with everyone else during the 5 Week Cumulative Testing to see if they still know the words fluently. Every five weeks, I will do a cumulative testing to determine if your child knows the word fluently, and that tells me that it wasn’t’ a lucky guess that day. I will also be re-assessing at that time to see if they know the words they originally missed during the first test. We are currently on week 4. I have attached the NSWD schedule and a list of Fry’s First 100 Words.

Every Thursday, our students will be assessed on their NSWD sight words. For your child’s reading development, it is crucial to know sight words for the following reasons:
- These sight words are high-frequency words, meaning they are the majority of the words in the texts your students are reading
- These sight words usually do not follow phonics rules, so these words aren’t “sounded out”
- Knowing these words fluently (automatically) will help your child focus on comprehension, which is the whole purpose of reading
- Your child’s confidence will soar when he or she is able to open a book and read
